Temporomandibular disorder (TMD), more commonly known as TMJ is a term for acute or chronic inflammation of the temporomandibular joint (which connects your mandible to your skull). TMJ is commonly used to refer to a wide variety of conditions that affect facial joints, jaw muscles, and nerves.
tmj has a wide range of symptoms including:
-
ear pain
-
headaches (very common)
-
neck pain
-
jaw pain or soreness
-
jaw pain when biting or chewing
-
difficulty opening and closing the mouth
-
popping or clicking noises when opening the mouth
-
jaw stiffness
-
tinnitus
-
dizziness
-
sensitive teeth when no other dental problems can be found
If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, you may be experiencing TMJ and we can help at Fife Chiropractic Clinic!
the jaw consists of:
-
the mandible or jaw bone which connects to the skull at the temporal bone, this joint is called the temporomandibular joint or TMJ.
-
as usual the joint itself consists of bone, disk and nerves to supply suspension, stability and function.
The TM joint works to open and close your mouth and also to perform a sliding motion called translation, where your lower jaw moves down and forward allowing your jaw to move backward and forward and from side to side for talking, chewing, singing and yawning.
TMJ is very common, especially among younger people. There are many factors that cause and contribute to TMJ pain.
